Info
My Language Notebook (MLN) is a program that helps you learn any language. It can be used as a personal notebook (for example, to remember an interesting sentence you have learned) but with the added benefit of audio recording to help with pronunciation.
The main advantage of MLN is its flexibility. Students can use it as they please as their personal notebooks, but it can also be actively used in class or for homework. The program can be used as your students’ personal grammar or vocabulary notebook, but it is also very easy to create exercises for the students to do, such as translating exercises, pronunciation exercises or even listening exercises, where the pupils have to listen to a piece of recording and write down what they hear and possibly even translate it. The teacher can use the Notes section in order to mark the exercises and also use the Exclamation Mark and Star options to make it more visual.
The flexibility of this program goes as far as the teacher’s imagination. The easy to use category system can divide the sentences by grammar points, topics, or any other classification method you can think of. For instance, you can use a category to contain the various sentences of a dialogue, or consecutive sentences extracted from a text.
The last great advantage of this program is the fact that your pupils can share the projects that they have created with their friends or anyone else by uploading and downloading them to and from our web site or simply by emailing them to each other. This way, everybody can learn from each other´s notes and share any projects for which they are especially proud.
Here are some of the ways in which My Language Notebook can be used.
1. As a Grammar Notebook:
The following image shows MLN being used to store sentences demonstrating Catalan grammar, in particular, the articles. In this particular image, the student has selected the “Definite Article” category and then the “Feminine/Singular” subcategory and the sentences within this subcategory can be seen with some comments.
2. As a Vocabulary Notebook:
In the next image, a student of French for Beginners has recorded some sentences that he thinks will be useful for when he goes on holidays to France. He has divided the sentences into various categories.
3. Sharing Knowledge About Languages:
Here, someone is about to go on holiday to Vietnam and has found this project on the website where she can learn very basic words and sentences.
4. Teaching and Distance Learning:
The next series of images demonstrates one of the ways in which teachers can use MLN to give homework to their students.
The first image shows the exercise that the teacher has prepared. The teacher has written a note under each section of the homework, where she tells her students what to do. She saves the project, then either sends the project file to her pupils by email or uploads it to the website so they can download it.
Next, we can see that the student has opened the project and completed the work. We can also see that they have recorded the pronunciation as now an audio sign appears on the right-hand side of each sentence. Now the student saves the project and sends it back to their teacher for marking.
Finally, the teacher opens the project file sent back by the student and uses the notes sections to write comments about the student’s work. She can comment on the text and also on the student’s pronunciation as she can play it back on her own computer. Also she can make use of the exclamation mark in order to highlight areas where a student can improve and the star symbol to congratulate the student where appropriate. She then saves the project and sends it back to the student.
